Beaulieu is continually striving for greater efficiency from such renewable resources as the sun and water, to reduce greenhouse gases and its carbon footprint. Beaulieu reduces, recycles and reuses raw material and waste to work towards a better tomorrow for future generations.
When Beaulieu expanded its Farnham distribution centre, the company installed a solar wall instead of using conventional masonry. This remarkable technology is an efficient system designed to capture solar energy to heat the air between its specially-engineered walls before it enters the building’s ventilation system. This process reduces the building’s heating dependency on fossil fuel or electrical sources. On a bright, sunny day, the solar wall can raise the air temperature from 30 °F to 76 °F (16 °C to 40 °C). It’s another smart way Beaulieu commits to environmental sustainability.
Hydropower comes from the force of moving water and is a clean, renewable and ecologically friendly source of energy. Hydro-Québec, Beaulieu’s sole supplier of electricity, has fast moving hydroelectric plants built near fast water such as rivers and dams that capture and convert the gravitational force of water first into mechanical then electrical energy. There is no fuel to burn so there are no emissions released into the air, and that does a world of good for everyone.
For over two decades, and for every carpet style manufactured, Beaulieu has been hearing the ECO’s call for change. The goal is to continually improve the company’s efficiency, conserve natural resources, preserve the global ecosystem and to create quality products designed to meet the needs and promote the well-being of the consumer and the world in which we live.
Beaulieu has implemented plant-wide practices which redirect all cardboard, paper, plastic, metal, yarn, sheer lint and industrial waste for reuse or recycling, keeping more than 80% of it from landfill.
Over 80% of the earth’s surface is water but only 1% is suitable for drinking. Beaulieu is continually looking for new ways to reduce natural resource consumption by utilizing the latest technology and raw materials. By introducing a growing assortment of fashion carpet styles manufactured with solution-dyed nylon, Beaulieu has significantly reduced the water, chemicals and energy required in the normal process of dyeing carpet and decreased associated greenhouse gas emissions.
Beaulieu has retrofitted lights in its manufacturing plants to high-efficiency fluorescent tubes, a $350,000 investment. Motion sensors on equipment and a “Turn off the lights” campaign for all employees have saved significant energy. Other energy saving initiatives have included replacing standard motors with new high efficiency motors and ongoing upgrades to the equipment and processes to increase efficiency.
Indoor Air Quality
Indoor air quality is an important environmental consideration, especially as approximately 90 percent of time is spent indoors. Documented scientific evidence clearly supports the fact that carpet on the floor can improve indoor air quality and actually assist in easier breathing. The carpet fibres act as natural air filters, trapping dust, airborne allergens and other biological particles on the floor surface where they settle, out of the breathing zone, and immobilizing them until they can be removed by effective cleaning. Compared to other flooring, carpet is the lowest emitter of VOCs (volatile organic compound).
